Moon Druid/Warlock multiclass

D&D 5e Revised/2024

Hi everyone! I'm playing a druid in a nautical campaign, and we've met an NPC who has opened up the possibility for my druid to make a warlock pact. My initial plan was to simply play a single classed moon druid, but I was wondering if there was anyone on reddit who has experience playing a multiclass like this? I'll outline my thoughts, but I'd really like to know if there are any potential pitfalls I've missed, or if something sounds better/worse on paper than it has been in real play.

The campaign has a few features worth noting:

- It's running from levels 1-10.
- Long rests are relatively hard to come by, but short rests are plentiful.
- It's largely nautical; many encounters involve ships.
- We're running 5.5e. Older content requires DM approval but isn't necessarily off the table.
- Any officially published 5.5 material is fair game.

- We have a party of five; A bard, a ranger, a paladin, a rogue, and I'm playing the druid.
- Mood Druids retain their own proficiency bonus to attack roles while in beast form.

- There are no food or water creating spells, including Goodberries.
- Combats to date have been brutal.

My character is a 2nd level human druid with the Heir to House Vadalis background, and the Mark of Handling and Tough feats. I'm aware that there's considerable overlap between druid features and the Mark of Handling, but there are campaign-specific reasons I ran with that and it's all locked in.

My initial plan was Moon Druid 1-10:
- Level 4 feat (Warcaster, Wis->18)
- Level 8 Feat (Wis -> 20), or possibly Grappler (+1 Str, which applies to wildshapes) depending on how the party is working together by this point.

The alternative is Moon Druid 1-3, Warlock 1, Mood Druid 4-9.
- Character level 4 Warlock features (Eldritch Mind, Armour of Agathys, probably Comprehend Languages as my Cha is too weak for other combat options)
- Character level 5 Feat (Potent Dragonmark Wis-> 18)
- Character Level 9 Feat (+2 Wis -> 20, or Grappler as above).

The idea is that with the multiclass version I retain access to the maximum level of spellcasting I can get for my level. Although the Mark of Handling list is very limited and less than amazing, it *does* include Conjure Animals at level 5, which I'd be casting frequently anyway, scales well, and which I can cast in Wildshape form as I'll be a mood druid. I expect to be getting at least one short rest between every long rest, and often 2 or more.

Additionally, I'd be able to cast Armour of Agathys with my regular leveled spells, with the potential to stretch it out further thanks to the THP gained from wildshape. Also, having a 1st level pact slot handy will be useful for spells that can stay relevant like Command or Entangle, or for healing on short rests.

Because we retain our PC's proficiency bonus to attack rolls in beast form I don't think the delay in access to new CR beasts is quite as critical as it might otherwise be, but I've never played a Moon Druid before. Given our party make-up I suspect I'll be called on for support or control purposes a little more frequently than many other Moon Druids might be also.

I can see potential with the multiclass, but I'm also a little concerned that it might be one of those slightly fiddly builds that looks better on paper than it does in an actual game. I'll feel bad if I lose concentration on something at level 6 and I don't have the Moon Druid Wis bonus to Con saves, but I'll get over that. Thoughts oh great international hive mind of reddit?
