Best way to enjoy local multiplayer?

Hey, my bf and me started BG3 together on my PS5 last year and never finished it (we were both pretty busy and didnt have enough time). We wanna start again this year, however one thing that bugged us was that we both created a character, with one being more conversation-focused, but sometimes when we approach a new part of the map it sometimes seemed random who of us gets to talk. Is there a way to play with two players, but just one Tav? Or will the same problem appear? Is it possible to just have multiplayer during the fights?
