Obsession is officially the movie I have seen the most times in the theatre. Unemployment does have its benefits!

I can comfortably say that it's now one of my all-time favorites. I tend to see every big acclaimed release, but I never would have thought this movie specifically would capture my admiration and imagination to such an extent. Obligatory "I'm obsessed with obsession" joke.

Allow me to gush a bit. The screenwriting is so precise in establishing and exploring its characters, themes and story. The directing brings out fantastic performances from the cast and executes it's horror/cringe comedy tone beautifully while never feeling forced or unbalanced. The ethereal music elevates the sinister but simultaneously comforting atmosphere the movie offers.

I've said roughly the same thing in comments on here before but to reiterate, Nikki is one of my favorite characters because you shudder at the idea of being with her and at the idea of being her. Robbed of your own agency, of your own life because of something entirely out of your own control. Even post wish Nikki aka not "real" Nikki evokes sympathy because she's brought into existence to be someone she can never truly be, and sickly love someone that can never love her in the same way. "It's not mutuaalllll".

Bear and his morality has been the source of much discourse. To keep it brief, I view him as a reflection of how often our deepest desires are in reality very selfish. Even apparently decent people can be the source of so much pain and suffering if they fail to consider and care for other's needs and wishes.

Horror has always been a great vehicle to explore social issues and Obsession shows interest in consent, toxic relationships, gender dynamics, male entitlement and loneliness. Very relevant and controversial topics in the modern day. I find it fascinating how the movie manages to say things about these topics but seemingly avoids alienating any major demographic. You can tell by the box office. Men love it, women love it. Cats I'm not so sure.

While exiting the screening, I overheard from a group of high schoolers "that was great!". And I agree lol

TLDR It is indeed great.

If you want discuss anything I'm all ears.

Third viewing babyyyy
