Stubborn Punjabi in laws
NEED ADVICE
Hi guys, I've literally reached my wits end with my in laws. Background, based in the UK, me and my boyfriend are to be engaged this year and hopefully married next year. So currently I am technically the girlfriend and have known my partner's family for a year now. The in laws have shown themselves to be quite problematic as of late. I come from a very open minded and equality based upbringing where the males and females are treated similar and both given equal opportunities. My boyfriends sister though have been brought up to cook and clean from a young age. My boyfriends dad has expressed how girls who are from "a certain caste" have lost their culture and that living in a certain city means you are stuck up and having a degree doesn't mean shit (fyi everything that I am). The mum has expressed she isn't happy with how I've been as a "daughter in law" and that I basically don't do the same duties as her daughter's have done. The parents have expressed I don't take initiative as "a woman" and a future daughter in law. But I've always come over and offer my help, make the parents tea/coffee and always clean up etc. Its come to the point where they're not happy with anything I do and me and my boyfriend either adhere to what they want to keep the peace or separate ourselves from them. The hard part is I will have to live with them only for a few months before we get our own place. Do I just do everything they want (and run the risk of them just expecting more and more) or completly stick to my boundaries? I need help
