The plot is basically a **ridiculous over-serious spy-action comedy**:

**Threat Level: Midnight** follows elite secret agent **Chase Everett**, a former world-class hockey player turned international spy, who is pulled out of retirement when a gold-masked supervillain known only as **The Machine** threatens to detonate a stolen “midnight device” under Chicago.
The catch: the device can only be disarmed at exactly midnight, and the villain has hidden the key inside the final puck of a championship hockey game.

So the movie becomes this insane mashup of:
Spy thriller
Hockey action movie
2000s action parody
Citywide hostage plot
Helicopter explosions
A dramatic “one last mission” storyline

**Basic story**
Chase Everett is washed up, emotionally damaged, and living alone after losing his partner in a botched mission. Then the government learns that The Machine is planning to plunge the entire city into chaos using a satellite-linked explosive hidden beneath the arena.
Chase has to team up with:
A glamorous undercover agent
A dead-serious FBI handler
A useless but loyal sidekick
His old hockey rival
The final act is a hockey game where Chase has to score the winning goal, fight assassins on the ice, disarm the bomb, and defeat The Machine before the clock hits midnight.

**The big final line**
The villain says:
“You’re too late. The threat level is midnight.”
And Chase replies:
“Then I guess it’s time to turn back the clock.”
Then he scores, the arena explodes behind him, and he skates away in sunglasses.
