Seeking advice: unresolved hearing accommodation issue and workplace move

Management / Gestion

I’m looking for advice from anyone who has experience with duty-to-accommodate situations in the public service.

I have a documented hearing disability and an existing accommodation arrangement in place. One of my ongoing challenges is participating in virtual meetings and calls. My hearing aids do not work seamlessly with my work computer, and I require an accessible audio solution in order to participate effectively in Teams meetings and other work-related calls.

Management has been aware of this issue for several months. We have had multiple discussions about it, and I was under the impression that an accessible headset or alternative solution would be explored. However, despite repeated conversations (even to this very day), no effective solution has been put in place.

I recently moved to a new workspace with my team. While I appreciate being located with my colleagues, the move has highlighted that the accommodation issue remains unresolved. At the moment, if I need to participate in a Teams call, I often have to remove my hearing aids and use my AirPods as a workaround. Using both devices at the same time creates significant audio distortion and interference, making it difficult to understand what people are saying (they literally sound like aliens from my end, lol).

What is frustrating is not just the technology itself, but the fact that I feel as though I have spent months explaining the same issue and trying to find solutions on my own. I regularly find myself having to educate others about hearing-related barriers because my situation is not one that many people seem familiar with.

The impact is that meetings require more effort, communication is more challenging than it should be, and I feel like I am constantly adapting around a known accessibility barrier rather than having that barrier addressed.

For those who have dealt with similar situations, what worked? How did you get movement on an accommodation issue when management was aware of the problem but progress seemed stalled?

I am not looking to assign blame or create conflict. I simply want to be able to participate fully in my job without having to rely on ineffective workarounds every time I have a meeting.

TL;DR**:** Hearing disability + existing accommodation. Management has known for months that I don’t have an accessible setup for Teams calls. No solution has been implemented, and I’m still relying on ineffective workarounds to do basic parts of my job. What would you do next?
