What sorts of tasks did people compel demons to carry out on their behalf?
Some parameters:
- it’s gotta be demons, not magic or religion in general. Our practitioner doesn’t have to be a Christian, but they should think that their soul is possibly at risk.
- let’s stick to periods where any given person off the street was likely to think that demons were real and could act, so no Etsy witches
The cases I’m aware of where the evidence is a record of an attempt and not a testimonial are:
- the early Christians in Florent Heintz’s Agonistic Magic in the Late Antique Circus, who had reclassified the old gods as Pagen demons and seemed to be invoking them left and right to win at sports, get laid, and make money.
- The Middle Ages university students who from their spell books seemed to be summoning demons to cheat on their Latin homework
I’m curious if this tendency towards summoning demons for petty stuff is an actual trend, or a function of it not being my field so only the dumb funny cases make their way to my desk. Anyone have a record of someone summoning a demon for the sake of a grander ambition? Or anyone have more demons summoned ala chat gpt (get rich quick and cheat?)? 😈
