venting/ranting

I recently went through surgery and made it very clear to my partner that I needed support and wanted them by my side during recovery. While they helped in some ways, I often felt like I had to repeatedly explain why I needed support. It felt like my needs were being balanced against other things they wanted or felt they needed to do, rather than us being on the same team prioritizing my recovery.

What I’m struggling with isn’t whether they care. They clearly do and are now devastated by the breakup. My struggle is that I don’t know how to get past feeling like I had to convince my partner to want to be there for me during one of the hardest periods I’ve been through in years, and still ultimately had to rely on family because they couldn’t prioritize helping me for a few days.

Now that we’ve broken up, they say they understand, would do things differently, and want another chance.

From an outside perspective, is this the type of thing you work through, or does it point to a deeper incompatibility?
