Looking for recommendations for a big classic JRPG to sink my teeth into

Recommendation request

Title says it all pretty much. Well not really I guess I should elaborate on what I'm looking for. Hi everyone. I recently got the itch to play a really great JRPG. Something that will genuinely wow me. I currently really only have access to a PC so I'm a bit limited platform wise.

What I'm looking for is a decent balance of story and gameplay with a reasonably in depth skill/class/build system and ideally a classic setting and "feel" to the game. Would love for the game to have some engaging/interesting combat mechanic (like the Brave and Default system from BD for an instance) Not looking for something that's too heavy on tone, though it's not a deal breaker. For reference here's some of my favourite JRPGs of all time and ideally I'm looking for something like these three:

  1. Bravely Default (by FAR my favourite)

  2. Tales of Abyss (close second)

  3. Final Fantasy 7 (original, haven't gotten around to the remake)

Overworld travel and party conversations are a big plus, particularly if the characters are endearing (BD in particular stands out to me in that regard as I find the main cast to be utterly lovable). General preference is turn based though I'm not wholly opposed to action gameplay (though I will say I skew much harder towards Soulslike combat when it comes to action RPGs, so a lot of real time JRPGs just don't click with me).

I'm currently playing through Metaphor ReFantazio and enjoying that (but I'm also looking for a JRPG that's more standard/classic rather than Persona-like).

In terms of games I'm considering right now I'm looking into Trails in the Sky (well the whole series but I'd start with the first Trails in the Sky) and Octopath Traveler mainly, though I'm very open to any and all extra suggestions, but in general I would prefer newer releases rather than retro games. I'm also under some pixel fatigue so it'd be a bonus of that wasn't the artstyle (not a deal breaker as I am considering Octopath Traveler).

Oh I'm also a massive SRPG fan, but mainly heavily skewed towards Fire Emblem and from what I've seen there's almost nothing quite like it on PC, particularly with the newer entries like Awakening and beyond in mind so I don't expect there to be much to recommend there.
