Laptop guide for NIFT / design students — department-wise suggestion
A lot of people ask: “Which laptop should I buy for NIFT?”
So here’s a simple department-wise guide.
Don’t buy a laptop just because someone says “MacBook le lo” or “gaming laptop le lo.” Buy based on the kind of work your department will actually need.
For most design students, the safe minimum is:
16GB RAM
512GB SSD
i5 / Ryzen 5 / M2 or above
Good display
Dedicated GPU only if your work needs 3D/rendering/video
---
FC / Fashion Communication
Mostly used for:
Photoshop, Illustrator, Figma, Canva, InDesign, photography, video basics, presentations, branding, editorial, social media design.
Minimum:
i5 / Ryzen 5 / Apple M2
16GB RAM
512GB SSD
Good display
Best type:
MacBook Air M2/M3 16GB or a good Windows laptop with strong display.
You don’t necessarily need a gaming laptop for FC unless you want to do heavy video, 3D, motion graphics, or Blender.
---
FD / Fashion Design
Mostly used for:
Fashion illustration, CAD, Photoshop, Illustrator, CLO/3D basics, presentations, garment boards.
Minimum:
i5 / Ryzen 5
16GB RAM
512GB SSD
Recommended:
Windows laptop with RTX 3050/4050 if you want to explore CLO, 3D garment work, video, or heavier software.
---
TD / Textile Design
Mostly used for:
Prints, repeats, textile CAD, Photoshop, Illustrator, embroidery/weave work, moodboards, documentation.
Minimum:
i5 / Ryzen 5
16GB RAM
512GB SSD
Good display
Recommended:
A good display matters more than a heavy GPU. GPU is helpful but not compulsory unless you do 3D or heavy rendering.
---
KD / Knitwear Design
Mostly used for:
Garment CAD, technical flats, styling, graphics, presentations, knit structures, possible 3D garment exploration.
Minimum:
i5 / Ryzen 5
16GB RAM
512GB SSD
Recommended:
Windows laptop with dedicated GPU if you plan to learn CLO/3D or heavier garment visualization.
---
AD / Accessory Design
Mostly used for:
Product sketching, Rhino, Blender, KeyShot, 3D modeling, rendering, prototyping, presentation boards.
Minimum:
i5 H-series / Ryzen 7
16GB RAM
512GB SSD
RTX 3050 minimum
Recommended:
RTX 4050/4060
16GB RAM minimum, 32GB better
1TB SSD if possible
For AD, don’t buy a basic thin laptop if you are serious about 3D/product work.
---
Interior / Space / Product-heavy design
Mostly used for:
AutoCAD, SketchUp, Rhino, Blender, Lumion, Enscape, rendering, 3D visualization.
Minimum:
RTX 3050
16GB RAM
512GB SSD
Recommended:
RTX 4050/4060
16–32GB RAM
1TB SSD
Here, performance matters more than portability.
---
B.FTech
Mostly used for:
Excel, ERP, production tools, research, presentations, data, documentation, basic design software.
Minimum:
i5 / Ryzen 5
16GB RAM
512GB SSD
Recommended:
A clean lightweight laptop is enough. No need to overspend on gaming laptops unless you personally want to do design/editing/3D.
---
Simple buying rule
If you are in FC / TD / B.FTech:
Go for lightweight laptop + good display + battery.
If you are in FD / KD:
Go for 16GB RAM minimum. GPU is good if you want to explore 3D/CLO.
If you are in AD / Product / Interior / 3D-heavy work:
Go for Windows laptop with RTX 3050/4050 minimum.
---
Budget-wise guide
Under ₹45k
Only for basic work. Try to get at least i5/Ryzen 5, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD. Good for basic FC/TD/B.FTech only.
₹50k–₹65k
Good value zone for FC, TD, B.FTech and basic design work.
₹65k–₹85k
Best zone for most design students. You can get RTX 3050/4050 laptops or strong OLED/display laptops.
₹85k–₹1.2L
Good for MacBook Air 16GB, creator laptops, better RTX laptops.
Above ₹1.2L
Only needed if you are seriously doing 3D, rendering, animation, interior/product visualization, or professional video editing.
---
What to avoid
Avoid:
8GB RAM
256GB storage
Old i3 / Ryzen 3 laptops
Bad display laptops
Very old second-hand laptops without checking condition
Buying MacBook only for status
Buying gaming laptop when you only need basic Canva/Figma work
---
Final simple answer
For most NIFT/design students, the safest laptop spec is:
16GB RAM + 512GB SSD + i5/Ryzen 5 or above + good display.
For FC, MacBook Air M2/M3 16GB or a good display Windows laptop is enough.
For FD/KD, Windows with GPU is better if you want 3D/CLO.
For AD/Product/Interior, get RTX 3050/4050 minimum.
For B.FTech, don’t overspend — a lightweight 16GB RAM laptop is enough.
Your laptop should support your workflow, not just look premium.
