Is becoming a CPA still worth it in 2026?

QUESTION

The CPA landscape is rapidly changing, and so is the role of accountants in the industry in general. AI is replacing the entry-level work that helped you learn how to do the job and why you're doing it. Private equity is driving firms to consolidate and push rapid changes onto their employees. Starting pay still often trails tech and finance roles and busy season is still brutal! On the other hand, the pathway to licensure is getting simpler with 120-credit options rolling out nationwide, the talent shortage gives credentialed professionals real leverage, and long-term salary is attractive.

If you were or are deciding today, is the CPA still worth the time and money in your opinion?
