Advice on how not to destroy fiber DACs?

I just received and promptly destroyed a new 5m DAC cable. As I was gently unwinding it, it kinked. I feared the worst and as soon as I plugged it in, no lights :( A nice waste of $50 with tax & shipping.

How does one do this properly so I don't throw away another $50?
