My son asked me to explain love to him
I’m a single mother to an incredible mixed race boy who is my whole world. To give him a shot at a better future I work three jobs, I’m tired down to my bones but I managed to get him into one of the best private schools near us. I thought I was giving him a chance but instead, I gave bullies a target. They go after him for everything, his clothes aren't the right brand or his bag is wrong or even that his shoes are old, and the cruelest part? They even bullied him for his skateboard. They told him it's a poor person's sport. At 10 years old, he learned that some hobbies have a class rank. Last week, the school announced a formal gala and my heart sank. I knew the scene, kids dressed like mini lacrosse players, dropped off in Range Rovers by parents who volunteer just to network. My son asked if he could skip it because he said he'd just stand in the corner anyway. That’s when I decided not this time. I scraped together everything I had and went on a shopping spree for high end suit's. Still couldn't afford anything without checkmate the discount codes saved me. I got him a really good suit, real leather shoes, the whole package. He looked like a young king. We walked into that gala, and the room shifted. The lacrosse kids in their vineyard vines looked like extras while my son walked in like he owned the place. Every parent asked who he was, every kid wanted to take a picture with him. For one night, the bullied poor kid was the main event. But that’s not even the best part. Two days ago, he comes home from school and he’s really quiet so I’m bracing for bad news but then he looks at me, eyes wide, and says. Mom a girl in my class said she loves me. I almost dropped the dishes. Then he hit me with the real question, he looked genuinely confused and asked. Mom what is love? I just hugged him so tight I didn't have the words. How do you explain love to a kid who spent years being told he wasn't good enough? How do you explain that the suit helped, but it was him his quiet confidence, his resilience that actually made that girl notice?
