Any indie author events or indie film screening in the region?

Hi fellow Redditors! Do such events happen often in any city within Durham Region? Has anyone ever attended and how was the experience? I am asking because I am hosting one and very curious about everyone's appetite for arts & culture, literature & film, that sort of things. Thank you!
