Laptop vs iPad for NIFT/Design Student — do you really need both?

A lot of students also ask: “Should I buy an iPad for NIFT?”

My honest answer:

If you have financial constraints, buy a laptop first.

If you don’t have financial constraints, an iPad is definitely worth it.

A laptop should be the priority because it gives you much more range. You can do assignments, presentations, research, Adobe software, Figma, documentation, portfolio work, video editing, and internships/freelance work. So if you can afford only one device, go for a laptop.

An iPad is not compulsory in the first year, but it is very useful, especially for departments like FD, KD, PD/AD, and even FC depending on your workflow.

Where iPad helps:

For Fashion Design / FD:

Fashion illustration, garment sketches, drapes, details, styling ideas, moodboards.

For Knitwear Design / KD:

Fashion illustrations, knit patterns, textures, silhouettes, presentation work.

For Accessory Design / AD / Product Design type work:

Product ideation sketches, bags, footwear, home decor, accessories, form exploration, quick concepts.

For Fashion Communication / FC:

Storyboarding, layout roughs, illustration, visual ideation, photography planning, content concepts.

For Textile Design / TD:

Motifs, patterns, repeats, surface designs, embroidery ideas, print exploration.

The biggest advantage of an iPad is that sketching and ideation become faster and cleaner. If you already have a good hand in drawing, it can genuinely help you build better visuals and presentations. It is also useful in the long run because an iPad can easily last 5–7 years if handled properly.

But again, don’t buy it just because everyone is buying it.

If you don’t have an iPad, you can still manage with pen and paper. You can also borrow a friend’s tablet whenever you need it for specific illustration work. In the first year, it is not a survival requirement.

Simple device priority

Case 1: You can afford only one device

Buy a laptop.

Case 2: You already have a decent laptop

Then you can consider an iPad.

Case 3: You have no financial constraints

Go for both — laptop + iPad is a great combination.

Case 4: You have serious financial constraints

Don’t stress. Start with whatever you have. A laptop is more important than an iPad. You can manage sketches on paper and slowly upgrade later.

Case 5: You are in FC / AD / Interior / 3D-heavy work

Prioritize a better laptop first. Performance matters more.

Case 6: You are in FD / KD / TD / AD and love illustration/sketching

iPad will be very useful, but still buy it only after your laptop situation is sorted.

Final advice

Don’t see laptop/iPad as status products. See them as tools.

A good laptop is a necessity for most design students.

An iPad is a very useful add-on, but not compulsory.

If budget is tight: Laptop first. iPad later.

If budget is comfortable: Go for both, it will help for years.
