Question: Transitioning from 65L to sub-40L without losing my mind
I've been hiking with a standard 65L internal frame pack for the last three years. It was my workhorse for everything from weekend trips to longer thru-hikes, but I'm feeling the weight penalty every single time I head out. My base weight is currently sitting around 14lbs, which feels high for someone who spends all their time reading gear reviews on this sub, but I think the big pack is the main culprit. I'm looking to make the jump to something in the 35-40L range, but I'm struggling with the logistics of downsizing.
Specifically, I'm worried about how I'll manage my sleep system. I currently use a slightly thicker inflatable pad and a quilt that doesn't compress as well as the high-end stuff. If I move to a smaller pack, am I going to be forced into buying a new pad and quilt just to make the volume work? I'm also curious about how people handle food storage in smaller packs. I usually carry about 3-4 days of food, and in a 65L, I just toss it in the bottom and call it a day. In a 40L, I feel like I'll be playing a game of Tetris every single time I pack.
Has anyone here made this specific jump recently? Did you find that you had to overhaul your entire kit to make it work, or was it just a matter of better organization and compression straps? I'm looking at a few options like the Hyperlite Mountain Gear Southwest or maybe a smaller Osprey, but I'm torn between going full DCF or sticking to something more traditional. Any advice on what to prioritize when downsizing would be huge.
