Does feeling bad for the ₹370 guy make me a bad feminist? Is this empathy, internalized misogyny, or something else?
I'll be honest: when I first heard that the guy reportedly lost his job, my immediate reaction was, "Yaar, galat bola hai, but should someone lose their job over one stupid comment?"
And that made me uncomfortable with myself.
As a woman, and as someone who is affected by patriarchy in countless ways, why was my first instinct sympathy for the man facing consequences rather than for the women who have spent years dealing with this mindset?
Does that make me a bad feminist? Does it mean I've internalized some of the same beliefs that society teaches all of us? Or is it simply possible to think a comment was wrong while also feeling uneasy about the scale of the punishment?
I genuinely don't know the answer, and that's part of why this controversy has stayed with me.
