Attempting My First Muscle Up: Difficult Skill That Required More Technique Than Strength

For the longest time, I thought muscle ups were all about raw strength. I could do a decent number of pull ups and dips, so I figured I'd get my first muscle up pretty quickly.

Yeah, not even close.

My first few attempts were rough. I'd pull as hard as I could, get stuck near the bar, and just kinda hang there looking confused. It felt like I was missing something.

Turns out I was.

What surprised me most was how much technique matters. Once I started working on explosive pull ups and learning the transition part of the movement, things finally started clicking. Before that, I was basically trying to brute force it.

Another thing that helped was using resistance bands for practice. It let me focus on the movement pattern without fighting my full body weight every single rep.

The day I finally got my first muscle up was awesome. It wasn't clean, and it definitely wasn't pretty, but I got over the bar. I probably looked ridiculous celebrating, but I didn't care.

If you're chasing your first muscle up, don't just focus on getting stronger. Strength is important, but learning the timing and technique is huge. Record your attempts too. Watching the footage showed me mistakes I never noticed while training.

It's one of those skills that can feel impossible for weeks, then suddenly happens out of nowhere.

Keep grinding and trust the process. That first successful rep feels insanely rewarding.
