Guys When would you use instant meshes in a project

Recently i was working on a creature and had made some details on the face like nostrils and eye sockets, i had then used instant meshes, this was my first time, to fix the geometry and then saw my details were smushed, i shd have know, so i subdivded and now am working on the intricate details, will share soon. I js wanted to know what u guys do and in what order since im a bit confused.
