Senior software engineer looking for work in Cambodia

Employment

Hi everyone, I’m a Senior Software Engineer from Singapore with around 6.5 years of experience.

I spent around 2 months in Cambodia and honestly I really loved the country. Recently I had this random thought of whether it makes sense to move there and work as a software engineer.

Long story short, I was laid off last year. Tech has been pretty brutal with layoffs, hiring freezes, and way more competition. Instead of taking a break, I jumped straight into a startup as a co-founder/founding engineer.

We actually made decent progress — built the product, got into an accelerator, and secured some clinic partnerships. The issue is that it’s a medtech product, so scaling it is not straightforward. Regulations, approvals, and clinical validation require more funding and time before we can really commercialize.

So now I’m back looking for full-time roles again.

While job hunting in Singapore, I realized I don’t really see myself joining just any company for the sake of having a job. Then I started thinking: why not look at Cambodia instead? I enjoyed my time there, and maybe my experience could be more useful in a growing tech scene.

I know realistically there will be a pay cut and it won’t match Singapore salaries, which I’m okay with. At this point I care more about staying in software engineering, building meaningful products, and working somewhere I can actually contribute.

Just curious:

  • How is the tech scene in Cambodia right now?
  • Where do people usually find software engineering roles besides LinkedIn?
  • Are there startups/companies that hire foreign engineers?

If anyone working in tech there has advice or connections, would really appreciate it 🙏
