Saw this on HN: an interview about AI welfare that feels relevant here
Came across this on Hacker News and thought of this sub immediately.
The linked piece is an interview with someone named Yafah Edelman about AI welfare, hosted on a Substack called Thing of Things. That's genuinely all I know from the post itself, since I'm working from just the title and link rather than the full article.
But the title alone is worth pausing on. AI welfare as a topic keeps getting lumped in with either sci-fi speculation or corporate ethics PR, and neither feels quite right. My read is that the people doing serious thinking about it, like whoever Yafah Edelman is, are probably grappling with questions that map pretty directly onto what this community already cares about: what kinds of systems deserve moral consideration, and how do you even begin to figure that out.
I keep getting stuck on whether the frameworks we use for animal sentience are actually useful here or whether they break down completely. Curious if anyone has read the full piece.
