Devastated about rehoming due to international move
TL;DR - We are moving internationally and cannot afford to bring our 4.5 y/o cat with us. Seeking support and reassurance that we are doing the right thing for her while navigating our own grief at this reality.
My wife and I are moving internationally in October. I'd prefer not to share the country, but it has strict vaccination requirements, a two week quarantine, and a $10k+ price tag to bring a cat, which is just not feasible for us. Even if we could make this happen, we are not confident that our cat would even survive the flight, let alone the quarantine period, due to her distress level at small outings such as going to the vet.
We are just heartbroken over this. We've had her since she was 6 months old. She was diagnosed with toxoplasmosis after coming home from the shelter and has had some behavioral issues - we joke that the parasite broke her brain, because she gives mixed messages on whether or not she wants to be interacted with. I.E., she will slow blink and rub against us for pets, then bite when we try to pet her. Behavioral things aside, she is a wonderful companion who is very attached to us. Even as I am typing this, she's meowing and bringing me her favorite toy as an offering 😭 She prefers to hang out with us in whatever room we are in, she sleeps underneath the covers with us in bed, and it is just so clear that we are her people.
Knowing that she would not thrive in a shelter environment because she's not a cat that would be adoptable (she would just hiss at visitors the whole time), we are working very intentionally with an organization that fosters cats who need specialized care and/or have behavioral issues. We just completed her final vet appointment to get the organization everything they need to take her. In theory, once I email them the latest documentation, they could come get her at any time.
We both feel so guilty in that we are choosing a new life adventure over our cat. We essentially took on a dependent and are leaving her to an unknown future. That said, one of us is trans, and every day feels scarier living in the USA. We know that we won't escape the laws coming towards trans individuals, but we hope to gain reprieve from the current administration's cruelty and start a new life. We don't think that our cat would benefit from this uncertain future either, and we are hopeful that this organization will be able to find her a similarly patient, kind family or person to care for her.
If you read all of this, thank you for holding the space. I am really upset about it today. I truly believe that we are doing the best that we can for her with what is available to us, but it is still so, so hard.
