NYT best travel gear lists feel kinda sponsored

Reading through a major newspaper's gear recommendations and half the items are brands I have never heard of with premium price tags. The whole thing reads more like affiliate link bait than honest advice. Do people actually trust these roundups anymore or is it just content farms dressing up product placement?
