okay the title is slightly misleading. buuut lemme start this off by saying i (25f) have two female inside cats (8 and 9 year old.) my bf (26m) and i have been together for 5 years and are planning to move in together once he finishes school next year. currently, we both live at home, but i spend a lot of time/days at his house, where he lives with just his dad vs my big family.
i’m a huge animal lover and a couple years ago, this skittish stray female cat (abt 4 years old) ended up finding her way to me. i’ve slowly gained her trust and we’ve become so close. i even fixed her. i love her just as much as i love my other cats. the only difference is she is outside, as i can’t bring her in. my other cats have gotten used to her presence as well, but they’re not completely adjusted due to their different living situations. since she also is a “stray,” she’s very hesitant when it comes to other people (even my mom who feeds her when im not there) as i am the only person she trusts, but she’s gotten so much better over time.
my bf and i were talking about our future and the subject of my cats was brought up. i mentioned how im excited to have all 3 of them finally in our own space. my bf loves both my cats and has mentally been preparing to live with them, as he’s never had any pets/cats before. i know it’s going to be a huge adjustment to him, but that’s when he said he didn’t know we were going to be taking in all three. i was confused as he’s watched me grow my relationship with my outside cat and knows how much i’ve done for her and how much i love her.
in his defense, i never really did mention it either but i feel like it was kind of a given as i basically care for her already as if she’s mine for the past 3 years.
he said he wasn’t sure if he was ready to live with her because it’s already going to be an adjustment getting used to my other two cats + now adding another cat who has never lived inside and has to make her own adjustments. he just thinks is going to be overwhelming. i guess this whole time he thought i was going to find her another home or take her to the shelter when this move happened. we got into a small argument about it. i don’t think either of us is wrong or right. i’m just a little upset about it though. i don’t want to give her up. we still have some time to talk about it and consider our options, but i’m not sure what’s going to happen.
