Hi everyone,

I have a 16-week-old Australian Shepherd puppy, and I’ve noticed that one of his toenails sticks up and angles outward more than the other nails on the same paw. I’ve attached photos and a video for reference.

He doesn’t appear to be in any pain, limp, or excessively lick the toe. The toe also doesn’t seem swollen or red, and it doesn’t appear to bother him at all.

I discussed it with my veterinarian, and he mentioned that surgical removal of the affected toe/nail could be considered in the future if it becomes problematic. However, since it currently isn’t causing any discomfort or functional issues, he does not recommend removing it at this time and suggested monitoring it instead.

I’m curious if anyone else has experienced something similar with their dog, especially an Australian Shepherd or another herding breed.
Did your dog’s nail or toe look similar?
Was it caused by a toe alignment issue, a nail-bed issue, or something else?
Did it improve as your puppy matured?
Did you eventually need surgery, or was monitoring sufficient?
Have you experienced any long-term complications?

My main concern is whether this could lead to problems later in life or if it’s something that many puppies simply grow up with and do fine.

I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences and any advice you may have. Thanks in advance!
