Mechanicum -> Adeptus Mechanicus

I was reading the night lords omnibus, and this piqued my interest.

'What is the mechanicum?'

'You would know it by their slave-name: the Adeptus Mechanicus.'

Why did this name change happen? Is it really a "Slave-name" or is that just Night Lords being Night Lords?
