Should my 10 year old golden get a hip replacement
I am second guessing whether my 10-year-old Golden Retriever should have a hip replacement. The x-rays are about a year old. He has his surgery scheduled for June 16^(th) for his left hip. I was told I would be able to schedule his right hip at-least 8 weeks after his left hip. I am just really unsure whether I should go through with his hip replacement or not.
To me, he doesn’t seem to need it. When his vet saw his x-rays, he told me he must be in a lot of pain and is just good at hiding it. When the vet examined him, he said he does not have full mobility on either of his hips but his left hip is the worst. He is still very active and playful, he just sleeps a lot more, takes longer to get up and get tired faster; all things that I assume are normal for a dog his age. I am scared of the 4-month recovery and the heightened risk for infection. If it something that he is definitely going to need later, I would obviously prefer for him to have it now than when he is older.
I am lucky I have been paying for health insurance for him since I got him, so the out-of-pocket cost for me is minimal.
Anybody’s input or feedback is welcome.
