Unpopular opinion: the RTD2 era is overhated.

Discussion

With the rather shocking but not so surprising news that RTD is leaving the show and no Christmas special will be made after all leaving the future of Doctor Who in question, we have now definitively reached the end of the RTD2 era of Doctor Who. And personally, it wasn't nearly as bad as people have made it out to be.

If I'm being completely honest, the main letdowns were the season finales and also, in my opinion, the fact that we only got 8 episodes per season instead of 10/11 episodes per season if the 5 episodes of TWBTLATS were instead made as more Doctor Who episodes. Otherwise, most of the standalone episodes were at least decent, the 60th anniversary specials were good and the 2 Christmas specials were fine by Christmas special standards. There were definitely a couple of bad standalone episodes like Space Babies (probably the worst) and The Interstellar Song Contest (forgettable and mediocre), but then we also got genuinely great ones like Boom, 73 Yards, Dot and Bubble, The Well and Lux.

But what that mainly means is that the quality was highly inconsistent, just like it was back when Moffat was showrunner. And, whilst it's not saying much, the era was certainly better than the Chibnall era which was almost consistently poorly written with some especially bad episodes like the Timeless Children and Legend of the Sea Devils.
