Gemini has been throwing errors at me all morning right after Google quietly changed how Gemini AI usage limits work in my Google One Premium plan

Discussion :Discussion:

So this morning I sat down to actually use Gemini and it just won't cooperate. I barely typed anything and it hits me with "Something went wrong (1076)" and "Too many requests in a short time period. Please try again later." I wasn't spamming it. A couple of prompts and it tapped out.

And the timing bugs me, because just on monday night I got an email that Google is changing how the Gemini app handles usage in my Google One Premium subscription (now, its renamed as Google AI Plus). They added new "compute-based" limits and removed 200 AI credits per month that was part of plan. The system now looks at how complex your prompt is, which features you use, and how long your chat runs, and it resets every five hours until you hit a weekly cap. The notice said this "should allow you to maintain the same experience." Then this morning the same experience is error messages. Make it make sense.

I sat with it for a minute and realized I have seen this Google pattern before. Google bricked the Revolv smart hub in 2016 after marketing it with a "lifetime" promise. They shut down the Nest Secure alarm in 2024 and now literally tell owners to stop using it because it gets no more security updates. People bought that alarm to feel safe.

The lesson I keep relearning is that you don't really own most of what Google gives you. You use it through their servers, and they can rename it, change how it works, or switch it off whenever they want, and your only job is to live with it.

I'm not quitting Google. But I read the boring notices now, I keep my own backups, and I treat the word "lifetime" as marketing.

Anyone else getting these Gemini errors today? And has Google ever changed or killed something you actually depended on?
