Earth friendly yarns for Amigurumi

Question

My sister has asked me to make a crocheted farmers market play food set for her, she’s very big into minimizing impact and keeping things safe for the little ones.

I’m looking for natural/organic/earth friendly yarns without toxic dyes that come in a variety of vegetal colors that aren’t going to stain little hands and whatever else they may come in contact with. Worsted or DK weight. I’m in the middle of the US, so I’d prefer to avoid international shipping.

My experience with local yarns tend to be they are dyed in such a way they leave stains.

I’m making children’s toys, so expensive soft wools and silks are out. I’m looking for cotton and am allowed a minimal amount of recycled polyester/acrylic.

My normal method is the big name brands (Lion Brand Re-Up was my first thought) but I know she would prefer to avoid that.

Thrift and unravel - looking, but thrift stores are rarely a good deal around here for this.

Any suggestions on brands or other ideas?
