Question about HPV contraction

I’m not very knowledgeable about STIs. I’ve read that 80%+ of people will get HPV at some point. I’ve always been HPV negative when getting checked. I’ve had two sexual partners in my lifetime, one who was a virgin. The other was someone who seemed more high risk for STIs (casual relationship) and we didn’t use protection for mutual oral sex. If I didn’t get HPV from him, does that mean he’s not carrying it? Is that rare? Or was he just clear when we were intimate? I got the impression most people are carrying it as adults who are not in monogamous relationships.
