How do I go about picking my fav EPL team?

I’m American and a new soccer fan since my son and I started watching together. My favorite player is Haaland, but I feel picking Man City could be wrong, and have already received some backlash and warning about that. So, how do I choose a team? Which teams should I stay away from because of recent history and Which teams are prob okay to root for?
