Sudan Gurung resigned as Home Minister after media reports questioned his alleged business and shareholding links with controversial businessman Dipak Bhatta, who had been arrested over alleged misuse of company funds to buy shares.

The issue was not small. Reports claimed Gurung had shares in Star Micro Insurance, a company allegedly connected with Dipak Bhatta and the Shankar Group. After the pressure increased, Gurung resigned.

Then what happened?

A probe committee was formed. The government has still not publicly released the full report. But somehow, Sudan Gurung got a clean chit and returned as Home Minister.

This is the part that makes people angry.

Instead of clearly proving to the public that Gurung’s wealth, share investment, and financial links were clean, the committee appears to have shifted the blame to “system weaknesses.” Weak asset declaration rules. Informal income. Unregulated private share transactions. Poor banking monitoring. Lack of proper mechanisms.

So apparently, when questions are raised about Sudan Gurung, the problem is not Sudan Gurung. The problem is the “system.”

How convenient.

If an ordinary Nepali citizen had unexplained income, suspicious transactions, or questionable investments, would the state say, “Don’t worry, the system is weak”? Or would that person be dragged through tax offices, banks, police, and courts?

But when a powerful person is involved, suddenly everything becomes a loophole, a technicality, or a policy issue.

Even worse, the committee reportedly seemed more concerned about how Gurung’s private financial information leaked than whether the public had a right to know about possible conflicts of interest involving the Home Minister.

That tells you everything.

If Sudan Gurung is truly clean, publish the full investigation report. Let the public read it. Let independent people examine it. Let citizens decide whether the clean chit makes sense.

But hiding the report while putting him back in the Home Ministry looks less like accountability and more like a political washing machine.

In Nepal, ordinary people are punished by the rules.

Powerful people are saved by the loopholes.
