24M. I’m torn

Findapath-Job Choice/Clarity

Hey all, I’m 24 living in western Canada. I got into retail sales about 3 and a half years ago.

At my first company I made about 73k before taxes. I was there until almost exactly a year ago. So I spent about 2.5 years of my sales career there. I really liked it, enjoyed going to work. Even if it wasn’t making me crazy bank.

I left that job to find something potentially more fruitful, it didn’t work out. I tried car sales and absolutely hated it, and made pretty shit money. I moved on after about 6 months and am back in a similar space to what I was at before. I’m on track to probably making 60k this year so it’s been a bit of a step back.

I’ll be honest, I’ve not been a top closer at any of the 3 jobs I’ve had. I usually sit somewhere in the top half of performers. To be fair the longest I’ve worked at one of these jobs was 2.5 years. So maybe I’m just lacking the experience and benefits of having a built up pipeline.

I really like sales and think I have strong potential but retail sales sucks just purely based on relying on foot traffic, and also constantly dealing with conflict between other sales people.

Where I’m stuck is that I want to be a homeowner in the next year or so. I have a decent down payment, and my networth is about $50k before taxes. I’m moving back home in September for 10 months or so to save money for said house purchase. I don’t want to go back to school for any lengthy amount of time. So my options right now are:

A: stick it out at this job and have an earning potential of $70k-100k in the following year or two.

B: Find a new sales job. Preferably out of the retail space.

C: Get into the Oil/ Gas industry and work 80 hours a week for half the year out of town away from home. (Oil and gas is huge in my province and I have connections to get into the space and work my way up) I’m almost certain after 2 years of working out there I can make 100k+ easily.

I use to work blue collar jobs before I got into sales and I miss it sometimes. But working in the oil rigs is a different beast. Especially in our winter climate and being away from home for weeks at a time.

Sorry for rambling I know this was a lot but I feel like I could type for much longer. I’m just lost and feel pressure to buy a house sooner rather than later as I want to build a good life for my girlfriend and I.

Cheers,

TLDR: non retail Sales jobs?? Big Oil field money??? Am I just bad at sales??
