Hey, I'm one of like 40 volunteers for AFS-USA in Upstate NY (Upstate as in all the way out to Buffalo, not just 'Upstate') .

If you cut Upstate in half using 81, the western half has a few host families for the upcoming school year, the eastern half has none.

We've got so few host families going into the 2026-27 year compared to last year, not just in our area but everwhere.

So many high schools, especially in rural areas, love hosting international exchange students. We just need to find host families nearby who want to open up their homes for the invaluable experience of welcoming a foreign student into their family.

And on the flip side, if you have a kid who wants to study abroad and truly immerse themselves in a foreign culture/language (not just hang with expats for 3 months) - there are many opportunities, including scholarships, to do so with AFS.

It's a nonprofit. Mostly volunteer run (like myself). The organization started as a volunteer ambulatory and aid service during both WWI and WWII. The exchange program started after WWII to promote international friendship and peace.

Let's fight the downward spiral and boost some positivity and cultural exchange in our communities!
