Before combat, what do armies generally do before they go full blasting at each other?

Imagine a fleet of war ships about to attack a harbor,

the harbor are notified of their arrival and they're ready to defend,

from both sides, what do the soldiers do before the storm?

Im not talking about them fortifying their defenses, im more about like 30 minutes or hours before the battle?

Do they take their time for a good meal, talk with their friends and rest as much, or do they pump themselves like the commander giving speech, or just stationary watching from afar?

Im writing a space battle for a story chapter, while i can handle the story and character development, i have yet to truly make the battle a bit on the grounded side, with how everyone acts, or how they prepare other than upping their defense
