Looking for Advice to help my Sister after scary experience.

My sister is currently on a 72-hour psychiatric hold after experiencing severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms, including hallucinations. This was her second detox in about six months, and the symptoms were much worse than the first time.

The hallucinations started on her second day without alcohol. She had been prescribed chlordiazepoxide (Librium) for withdrawal and was taking it as directed, but despite that she began experiencing frightening hallucinations.

One of the scariest incidents happened when she became convinced that someone was inside the house trying to kill my father. She called the police because she genuinely believed he was in danger. There was no one in the house, but at the time it felt completely real to her. The situation was terrifying for our family and ultimately led to her being taken for evaluation and placed on a 72-hour hold.

I’m trying to understand whether others have experienced something similar. Has anyone had a loved one experience hallucinations during alcohol withdrawal even while taking chlordiazepoxide? Did doctors attribute it to the withdrawal itself, the medication, or something else?

I’m also trying to prepare for when she’s discharged and figure out what level of care she needs next. I don’t want her to go through something like this again, and I’m worried about the possibility of future withdrawals being even more severe.

For anyone who has been through something similar:

•	What type of treatment helped the most after discharge?

•	Did inpatient rehab make a difference?

•	How did you find a quality program?

•	What questions should I be asking the hospital before she leaves?

•	Are there specific programs or resources for people who have experienced severe alcohol withdrawal with hallucinations?

•	What support resources are available for family members?

We’re located in Southern California, but I’m open to any advice or experiences. I feel overwhelmed and want to make sure I’m doing everything I can to help her recover safely.

Thank you for any guidance.
