I had an emotional affair with my cousin's husband. She still has no idea
I have this secret weighing on me that I have never told anyone before, and that I don't think I can ever tell. Warning, this confession is really long and most of this is probably just nonsensical rambling that could be considered pointless. I just don't know how else to write this out without including everything. Even if no one sees this, I really need to get this off my chest.
I (23F) have a cousin (30F) who is my best friend. Let's call her Gemma. I have no siblings, and she has one older brother, so neither of us have sisters. Because of this, we've always bonded with one another and became super close from the very beginning. We're basically sisters by choice, and we tell each other everything. Even though she lives a few states away now, we're still inseparable and are constantly texting, calling, and keeping up with each other's lives. That's why I feel so awful about this whole situation.
Gemma and her long-time husband, let's call him Justin (32M), welcomed their first child three years ago. A beautiful baby girl. For most of my life, I looked up to their relationship. They first got together when she was 14 and he was 16, and they always seemed happy.
That is, until after their daughter was born. Like a lot of new parents, their relationship changed. They were sleeping less, spending all their time taking care of their baby, and every conversation became about responsibilities instead of each other. Gemma expected that. She's always wanted to be a mother and absolutely loves it. Justin wasn't prepared for it. He started drinking more often to deal with stress. What started as a way to relax eventually became a habit. Then, an obvious addiction. Gemma would tell me everything. He would stay up late drinking, blast music in the middle of the night, spend hours hiding in the bathroom, and get irritated whenever she asked him for help. She told me he had become a completely different person than the man she married. Then she found out he was cheating. Not once, but multiple times.
I was furious. Every time she called me crying, I hated him a little more. I couldn't understand how someone could treat the mother of his child that way. Especially someone who had stood by him for over a decade.
So trust me, if you had told me then that I would eventually become involved with him myself, I would have laughed.
Two years ago, when I was 21 and Justin was 30, they separated. He moved back to his home state while Gemma stayed where she was with their daughter. For privacy reasons, I'm changing some locations, names, and other details. A few months after the separation, I went to visit Gemma. Justin happened to be there because he was spending time with their daughter. At first, nothing happened. Honestly, I barely paid much attention to him. But during the visit, we started talking more than we ever had before. I realized we actually had a lot in common. We liked the same music, watched the same movies, had similar hobbies, and could talk for hours without running out of things to say.
One night we stayed up past midnight talking for hours and hours. At this point, it wasn't flirtatious. It just felt easy. But he told me he was surprised and impressed with me and how much I grew up from "Gemma's annoying little cousin." I've known him since I was around 7 or 8 years old. We drove out for a moment and he bought me a drink from the gas station. I'd never really been drunk before, and he knew I liked sweet drinks, so he picked out a strong strawberry Mike's Harder for me. Looking back, it probably wasn't the smartest decision for either of us, but at the time it just felt harmless. I got drunk for the first time in my life.
We sat outside talking for hours. At first it was just casual conversation, but eventually we started talking about more personal things. Our childhoods, family issues, and different traumas we'd experienced growing up. The more we talked, the more I realized how many experiences and feelings we've shared. There were things I had gone through that he understood. There were things he had gone through that I related to as well.
It felt weird because before that night, I had never really thought of him as someone I had much in common with. I definitely saw a different side of him. At some point in the conversation, he told me how proud he was of me. He said he'd watched me grow up over the years and that I had turned into a beautiful young woman. He talked about how much I had matured and how far I had come. I remember feeling embarrassed and flattered at the same time.
At the time, I didn't take it as flirting. I genuinely thought he was just being supportive or brotherly. As the night went on, the conversation became more emotional. I remember crying at one point while talking about some personal things that happened to me in childhood. He hugged me. Looking back, that hug probably meant more to me than I realized at the time. But in that moment, it felt completely innocent and familial. Like an older brother comforting me. He told me that I was family, that Gemma loves me so much and thinks very highly of me, and that we're the only family he's got. He also said that if I ever needed anything, he would always be there for me. There was nothing romantic about it in my mind. Honestly, I walked away from that conversation feeling comforted more than anything else.
The next day, we all went to the beach together. That's when I first started noticing things felt different. I found myself paying more attention to him than I ever had before. And that realization made me uncomfortable. I kept telling myself that I'm reading too much into things. He's just simply being kind. But looking back now, I think that night definitely shifted our perception of each other. I kept thinking back to that night, and how his eyes lit up, how he smiled and talked about the things he loves. I'm at this point feeling like im going crazy, because why am I overthinking this so much or feeling this way? He was always just my cousin's husband. Nothing more to me.
Eventually, he had to catch a flight back home, and I remember feeling somewhat sad when we hugged goodbye. I knew it'd probably be a long time before we could see each other again. Prior to this, we've only seen each other at family get-togethers, events, holidays, or on short visits like these. So once he was gone, I honestly thought that would be the end of it.
Instead, we started texting every so often. At first it was just checking in on each other. Sending memes, making each other playlists, recommending movies and shows, stuff like that. Then it became texting every day. Then hours-long conversations that would last until morning. We talked about our childhoods, our families, insecurities, regrets, and things we had never really told other people. We were surprisingly honest with each other. He opened up to me about his drinking, his depression, and how much guilt he carried over what happened with Gemma. He talked about how much he hated himself for the cheating and for the way he handled becoming a father and husband. And he said he really misses being with his child everyday, due to the long distance between him and Gemma.
I know a lot of people reading this probably think I'm stupid for hearing him. And trust me, I agree. But hearing those things made it harder for me to keep viewing him as the bad guy I saw previously. I still thought what he did was wrong, and knew he hurt Gemma. But I also started seeing him more as a flawed person instead of a complete monster.
I realized I was looking forward to hearing from him every day. That realization really scared me. I knew it wasn't normal, developing a crush on my cousin's husband. Even though they were separated and knew they were both seeing other people and going on dates, they still had a complicated thing going on. And we're still legally married. But at the same, I knew that whatever I felt would just be one sided, because men like him don't go for women like me. That's what I told myself. I knew exactly how bad it looked though, and I should've stopped while I was ahead, but I didn't. I was single and could have tried talking to other people, but the only person I wanted to chat with was him. I wanted to learn more about him, share more music, be closer. But nothing would ever happen, right? We're across the country from each other.
As time went on, he started complimenting me more. At first, it seemed innocent. He would tell me he was proud of me. He would tell me how much I had grown up. He would talk about how different I was from the little kid he remembered running around, and that I'm no longer just Gemma's annoying little cousin to him. That I've become his favorite person, and that he felt like we had something special. I couldn't tell at first cause again, I wasn't used to men like that talking to me. I've always been insecure so hearing him say certain things really meant a lot to me. One day he told me that he was genuinely impressed by the person I had become. Another time he told me I had grown into a beautiful young woman. I remember feeling flattered, but I still convinced myself it wasn't flirting. I told myself he was just being supportive and brotherly.
Then eventually he admitted that he's developed feelings for me, and that he felt more of a romantic connection with me than just familial. He told me that ever since that night we had together, he can't stop thinking about me or our conversation. And when he hugged me, he didn't want to let go. For context, I'm in Georgia, he's in New York, and Gemma is in Boston. He mentioned that he really missed me and wishes he could come down to see me again. That if I wasn't Gemma's cousin, he would have wanted to be with me.
What stuck was how honest he was about it. He told me that when he first noticed those feelings, his reaction was basically, "What the hell is wrong with me? That's Gemma's little cousin." He said he kept trying to push those thoughts away. He told me he felt guilty about them. At one point, he admitted that seeing me in a bikini at the beach had been one of the moments that really made him realize he was physically attracted to me. I remember feeling shocked reading that. It suddenly made everything feel real. It wasn't just friendly banter anymore. He was being more forward.
But by then, I had already started developing feelings too. Neither of us planned for it. That doesn't change the fact that it happened. And I could have stopped it right then and there. Instead of shutting it down, I told him that I feel the exact same way, but that I shouldn't. He's still married to my best friend, and with a child who is my niece. So we tried to take a step back. But that didn't last long.
For months after that, we were in this weird gray area where we were more than friends but not exactly together. But it was definitely a long distance fling, and we spoke every night. Overtime, things became sexual as well. We started expressing our fantasies with one another and having "dirty talk," exchanging photos and videos. I remember the first night it happened. My heart sank when he started speaking in a certain way. He was clearly drunk, but just became extra forward. I felt super nervous and uneasy. But as it went on, I couldn't refuse. Then it became a nightly occurrence. He'd get drunk, start being romantic with me, then sexual, asking for explicit photos, relieving himself, and then saying goodnight to me. The emotional talk switched to lustful. And yes, I did want him in that way as well, very much. It was a guilty pleasure. But I also noticed how much less emotional he got with me, and how more sexual.
I really liked him so was happy with any attention from him. Which was pathetic, I know. But we still talked every night. When morning came, he was back to being sober. So he was back to avoiding me, being dry, and more unresponsive. I brought it up to him and asked why he becomes a different person in the mornings. He said it's because once he's sober, he remembers that I'm Gemma's little cousin, that he's still married to her, and that they have a daughter together. He feels super guilty and like he's betraying her again, even though they're broken up. He knew she'd hate him. I knew the same. It still hurt me. He said the words, "It's just easier when I'm drunk. The guilt and shame goes away." It felt like a stab in the chest. But I told him I completely understood.
But I continued. I could be smiling while talking to him one moment, then immediately think about Gemma and feel sick to my stomach. I'd stay up talking to him all night, and then hear Gemma complaining about him all day. She would update me on the things he says or does. It's other versions of him that I never saw firsthand, only through her accounts and through their text messages. But she knew him more than any else ever could. They've spent half their lives together. So what would I know? It felt like I was constantly living two different realities at once. One where I genuinely cared about him. And another where I knew exactly who would be hurt if anyone ever found out. It was painful, and my chest always felt so heavy.
Eventually he told me he had bad news for me. My heart dropped. I thought someone found out. But no. His big news was that he started talking to someone else, and they became official. I was dumbfounded. I had no idea he was talking to other girls while telling me I was special to him. I was really hurt. But I didn't deserve to be hurt. Gemma was the one who deserved better. I told him I was happy for him. He asked if I was okay. I told him not to worry about me. That I'm glad he's jappy and moving on. He suggested that we could still talk and have our thing. I rejected the idea and told him that I wouldn't want to do that to his new girlfriend. He said "We're not even that serious. And it's long distance." Again, I rejected it, but was surprised he would suggest we continue our situationship. He apologized for hurting me.
Justin and I drifted apart. Then started talking again as friends. Then drifted apart again. Then he'd get drunk and text me out of the blue, flirt with me all night, then dissappear again the next day. Until we just stopped talking altogether.
There was one final time we saw each other in person after months of not speaking. Our family was having another get together, this time for Christmas. The second I saw him, all those feelings came rushing back. On the first night, everyone got drunk, but him and I were the last ones standing again, just like last time. I gave him a small gift, something I bought for him while we were still a fling. He loved it and gave me a big hug. We ended up kissing. Then one thing led to another, and we were on top of each other, kissing as if we had been waiting for this moment all day. He cupped my face and held, and it felt safe and passionate.
Eventually, we came to our sense and knew we had to stop. There was always that fear in the back of our heads that we could get caught. And Gemma was in the room right next to us. Even though I was drunk and wanted to, I knew I couldn't. So no, we did not make love, and we never even touched each other inappropriately. Everything was just so emotionally charged. We went to sleep. The next night, his flight was scheduled. And he had to leave. I was devastated.
When he got home, I called him. He told me he loved kissing me and holding me, but that he's glad it didn't go any further. Because he knew he'd just regret it and feel guilty. Not only because of Gemma now, but because of his new girlfriend now. He said that they were getting pretty serious. I told him I agreed, and that we should just leave it at that. He said that he's glad I understood. But that was that. After we hung up, I just cried the rest of the night. I cried more over this dumb short-lived fling than I had for any other real relationship I was in. And that was that. It was over. We eventually just stopped talking completely now. It's been a year since we last spoke.
Gemma still tells me stories about him. Shows me his texts to her. Saying how he misses her, wants their family back, how he loves her. All while he's still with this new girlfriend that he was apparently getting serious with. I learned from Gemma that Justin started talking to his girlfriend in May of 2024. The month right before he started talking to me. I was never special to him. He just told me what I wanted to hear. And the new girlfriend is always posting photos of her and him together. Gemma is hurt that he kept that from her for so long. Because, I other news, Gemma and Justin were still sleeping together every time they visited each other. Even though they were separated. Even on the same week we had our "special" night together. He cheated on his new girlfriend with both me AND Gemma. He was never going to choose just one of us. And it was never going to be me.
Now, every time I see Justin's texts to Gemma, which she shows me, I see how charming, expressive, apologetic, and sweet he seems. But it's a lie. It's his way of charming every girl he sees. He just has a way with words, as Gemma told me. The worst part is, I can't even open up to my best friend, my sister, my cousin, my most favorite person in the world about the hurt he's caused me. About how well I can relate to her disappointment in him. About my most recent heartbreak. Because I know that she's the one in more pain, and I will only make it even worse for her.
Time has passed now. Justin bought a new house with his girlfriend. Gemma still has absolutely no idea.
She still calls me. Still tells me everything. She still trusts me completely. And every time she tells me I'm her best friend, I feel guilty all over again. The thing that bothers me most isn't that things didn't work out with Justin.
It's that I betrayed someone who has loved me like a sister for my entire life, all for some stupid fling that might as well have meant nothing. I became the exact kind of person I always swore I would never become. I don't know if I'll ever tell her the truth. Maybe this is a secret I'll carry forever until I die. I don't deserve her. I'm sorry for the nonstop rambling, but thank you for reading.
