Watermelon Tourmaline Roughs β Why Those Color Bands Are So Unique π
Just got some gorgeous watermelon tourmaline roughs in, and I wanted to share why this stone's color zoning is so special.
What Makes the "Watermelon" Look?
The iconic pink center + green outer layer isn't random β it's a growth story frozen in crystal form.
Tourmaline grows in pegmatite veins over millions of years. During formation, the chemical environment around the crystal changes:
- Early growth (core): Manganese-rich conditions β pink/red center
- Later growth (rim): Chromium/vanadium enters the mix β green outer layer
- It's literally the same crystal recording different geological moments as it grew outward. No two stones have identical banding because no two growth histories are the same.
