Today was my (23m) birthday (I just turned 23). Mom (54) asked what I wanted for dinner, and I specifically told her a brand of mac and cheese that I haven't had in a while (Annie's, for those curious).
She went to the store and got cake mix, frosting and some extra goodies. The picture she sent me of the cart didn't have a box of the mac and cheese I requested, and I just thought that maybe she took that earlier in her shopping trip. Two of those extra goodies in question either weren't the brand we usually get or weren't the right kind. These two goodies are tortellini (she got a different brand that, to her credit, was still microwaveable) and DiGiorno's personal hand-tossed pizza (The store we usually go to hasn't stocked what I actually like, their stuffed crust personal pizzas, in months).
I gave her credit for trying, though pointed out her errors. I was willing to excuse them, especially the tortellini because the brand she got was microwaveable like the brand we usually get.
I then asked if she at least got the mac and cheese. She didn't respond for a bit, so I assumed she was driving home.
Then, she got home, and gave me very disappointing news; she forgot to get the mac and cheese, one of the things she originally stopped at the store to get.
I expressed my disappointment and said to go back and return the pizzas in exchange for the mac and cheese I specifically asked for, if possible. She responded by going on a tirade about how I'm a narcissist just like my father and overall making me feel absolutely horrible.
Here's where I may be the asshole: I probably came off as ungrateful because even though I gave my mom credit for getting me the extra goodies, I pointed out her errors. Maybe that's what set her off, but I'm not sure. I don't think I said anything to warrant that extreme of a response.
Now, for the million dollar question: Am I the Asshole?
tldr: Mom forgets mac and cheese at the store on my birthday and messes up some extra goodies. I give credit but express disappointment and she proceeds to call me a narcissist.
