Disclaimer: my friend is not dead.

I’ve been best friends with my best friend for several years. We have been through so much together and have been each other’s #1 supports through some of the darkest times in our lives.

Everything was great in our friendship until they started dating their current partner. I don’t like their current partner, never have (my friend knows I don’t). They have always seemed unfriendly, almost rude. My best friend went through a *horrible* relationship before this person, and they insist that their new partner is so much different. So I tried my best to be supportive, I really did. I really tried to give this person the benefit of the doubt.

The partner was becoming tolerable until they essentially moved in with us (without warning on my end lol) and became attached to the hip with my best friend. Since I have to see this person everywhere, and in order to talk to my best friend, I have to also talk to their partner, I began picking up on some subtle things they do. Dismissing my best friend’s emotions. Not respecting my best friend’s time. Essentially acting like a child at times. Saying slurs they can’t reclaim (mainly the gay one) and borderline racist stuff and have friends who say FULLY racist stuff (partner has apologized for both, but it puts me on edge).

I have grown to really not like them and wince on the inside when they talk to me. I miss when my best friend and I could hang out just the two of us. But whenever we hang out, their partner is an automatic +1. I specify sometimes that I want the hangouts to be just us, and my friend respects that, but sometimes plans originally including the two of us end up with the partner included because they invite partner.

I have confronted my friend about all of this, and they have apologized and are taking appropriate action. I’m not really mad at my friend. I wish that I did not have to see their partner lol

I miss my best friend
