Finger tight front sprocket nut

I'm changing the front sprocket on my versys 650 and I was all prepared for today to be the day I go and buy an impact for the front sprocket nut.

When I got to it I reached up to clean it off a little before I got the breaker bar on it and it spun freely.

Isn't this like, one of the more dangerous things that could have been wrong?
