Sorsby playing this year isn't a big deal

Debate

We live in a society where sports betting is completely normalized and woven into everyday life. Based on what's been reported, Sorsby reads more like an Ipad kid gambling-addict college kid who made dumb decisions than someone deliberately compromising competitive integrity.

The facts: Sorsby made roughly 40 bets on Indiana football while on the roster but not playing. He also made thousands of bets on MLB, NFL, NBA, and other sports he had zero involvement in. Every previous player who received a lifetime ban was tied to organized crime or large-scale operations where they actively participated in games and directly influenced outcomes.

Could Sorsby have had some insider knowledge when he made a handful of low-dollar prop bets on IU player stats? Maybe. But realistically, a redshirt freshman has access to roughly the same information as the equipment staff.

It's also worth asking: is this proportionate? Players facing sexual assault and violent criminal allegations routinely retain their eligibility. Sorsby voluntarily entered a 35-day inpatient treatment program, and there are no direct victims of anything he did.

Players absolutely should not bet on games they're involved in. Leagues have every right to enforce strong no-gambling policies because the integrity concern is real. But Sorsby's situation isn't point shaving. It isn't organized crime.
