blindsided at annual review
i just had my annual review with my bad boss. she used this time to bring up her feelings that i lack initiative and that she feels my technical skills are behind where she would like them to be. these were not items she brought up at any of our check in’s throughout the last year. when i stated my confusion on both, brought up examples where i have shown initiative + technical proficiency, she pushed back and said she didn’t have a clear example but it’s something she’s observed. i stated during the meeting that i hadn’t felt the conversation go in a constructive or helpful direction. i sent her this email following the meeting:
“Based on our conversation earlier today, I want to be honest that I am feeling discouraged. Many of the concerns raised were unexpected, as they had not been brought up previously during our check-ins this year. I am fully committed to improving in the areas you laid out, but I believe we need to establish a clearer middle ground where I feel supported and you feel confident in my abilities. I was caught off guard by the comment regarding "waiting for a project to be handed to me on a platter." While I appreciate that it was quickly walked back, it raised concerns for me about underlying tension or resentment that we need to clear the air on.
I would like to schedule some time to reconnect next week after we have both had time to process the conversation. I want to make sure we are on the same page so we can successfully drive the Implementation project forward this year.”
no response after 24 hours… but she has been emailing me on other day-to-day work. i have a meeting with her tomorrow 1:1, and i’m feeling incredibly anxious about it.
