I love buying back as a support
Support buy backs are so cheap that I basically have it up every fight, and I can usually make that money back with a couple of assists and/or a handful of creeps.
If I get blown up early in the fight, I just ask:
-
Do I have buyback?
-
Do I have tp or a way to get to the fight quickly?
-
Is the fight happening in a good position? (easy to get to, maybe some high ground advantage)
If the answers are yes, I'll often just buy back and go.
I don't think too much about whether my team can win my fight without me. My buy back is like 400 gold. It's almost free.
If I overthink it and we lose the fight, we might fall far behind. If I buy back on a winning fight, then who cares? We'll take more of the map and get a bigger advantage.
Even if my big spells are on cooldown, sometimes buying back and just dropping a good ward or casting one or two rounds of smaller spells is enough to guarantee the fight.
When so much of Dota is about taking small advantages and maximizing your individual impact, especially in a few key moments, it's hilarious how much I can squeeze out of buybacks as a support? I've won some games while buying back like 4 or 5 times.
Sometimes I kind of have to buy back in some drafts, because we might have a draft that has no real initiation, or my team is too tentative. But we'll still have to start a fight somehow. As a graduate of the Ceb School of Dota, I sometimes walk in and make enemies jump me to get some spells and info, so my teammates can jump them while I buy back to get back to the fight.
It works 100% of the time, most of the time.
