Dawntrail fishing bait

Hello,

I just got back into the game and finished Dawntrail today, I want to start getting my gathering jobs up to 100, but since it has been a long while, I forgot how you're supposed to know what bait to use. I have a levemete to catch marbled hatchetfish. I bought both freshwater bait and ocean bait in Tuliyollal, and I am at the spot the leve tells me to go to, but I am getting the message saying I am using the wrong bait with both the freshwater one and ocean bait. How do I know what bait I am supposed to use? I am at a small lake in Urqopacha so I figured freshwater would work but I was wrong apparently.
