What is Data Analytics? Netflix taught me this.
Back when Netflix was still a DVD rental company, it faced a big problem. The company had thousands of movies, but customers often struggled to find something they actually wanted to watch.
Most companies would simply add more movies and hope for the best. Netflix did something different.
They started analyzing customer data.
They looked at:
- Which movies people rented
- How users rated movies
- Which genres they preferred
- What they watched repeatedly
- Similar viewing patterns across customers
After studying this data, Netflix realized that different users had completely different tastes.
So instead of showing everyone the same recommendations, they built a personalized recommendation system.
Now, when a customer visited Netflix, they saw movies based on their own interests and behavior.
The result?
Customers found content they liked faster.
They rented more movies.
They stayed with Netflix longer.
What changed?
Not the movies.
Not the website.
The difference was Data Analytics.
Netflix used data to understand customer behavior and make better business decisions.
This is what Data Analytics really is:
Collecting data, finding patterns, understanding behavior, and using those insights to improve outcomes.
Today Netflix uses much more advanced analytics, but the core idea remains the same as it was in the beginning:
Stop guessing. Start using data.
