Need an answer to a simple question

This is going to sound stupid but here we go:

When you say “believe that Jesus paid for your sins” are you saying that right now my sins are paid for, that I have no sins left to pay but I don’t believe it yet? Or is it to believe that Jesus died on the cross but that my sins aren’t paid for? I can’t seem to find any information on this online despite how simple it is.

Basically is believing that Jesus paid for your sins to accept as true that at this moment my sins are paid for? For example: God is real whether I believe it or not. Are you saying that my sins are paid for whether I believe it or not? If no, what does it mean? Thanks
