I bought and reviewed 40+ cotton candy/cotton candy-adjacent fragrances
some of my various cotton candy fragrances
inspired by this post:
i've been on the hunt for my perfect cotton candy(!!) fragrance and i found the above post incredibly helpful so i thought i would add my own findings in! i'm not looking for marshmallow, or candy, or licorice, or fruit, or caramel, but pure spun sugar, which seems to be one of the most elusive notes. i've tried some of the ones in her post but also added a bunch of others i've come across in my search. not all of these are pure cotton candy or even have cotton candy notes but all of them have been suggested in some corner of the internet as resembling cotton candy. hopefully this is helpful to any other cotton candy lovers out there! (pictured are just some of the fragrances i've tried)
☁️ drugstore body sprays ☁️
body fantasies cotton candy body spray: it smells like melted purple freezies until the dry down, then dries down to something like cream soda. i can somewhat see how you would get cotton candy here but i'm just neutral on this 🎀 5/10 🎀
body fantasies pink vanilla kiss: similar to the bf cotton candy but maybe it's pink smelling rather than purple? i think it's supposed to be a dupe for pink chiffon from bath and bodyworks. it's a little more tart than bf cotton candy which is more sweet 🎀 5/10 🎀
bodycology sweet love: another dupe for pink chiffon. it's similar to pink vanilla kiss but maybe more complex, creamier and with more vanilla? 🎀 5/10 🎀
calgon cotton candy: it's similar to but softer and maybe slightly more fruity than the bf cotton candy 🎀 5/10 🎀
(the above four body sprays are all so similar to me it's difficult to compare them. all pleasant, synthetic, sweet scents that remind me of sugary children's drinks)
calgon marshmallow: i heard this was supposed to be a better cotton candy than the calgon cotton candy but i disagree. it smells exactly like a bag of fruity marshmallows. it's powdery rather than fluffy. i don't love marshmallow fragrances so i don't particularly like this 🌸 3/10 🌸
🍧 perfumes with cotton candy/spun sugar notes 🍧
outremer vanille: i get more cotton candy than vanilla in this. it's so delicate and airy with a lovely transparent quality, and not fruity at all. if i really wanted to nitpick this, i do sometimes get a slight undertone of flat soda with this one, but it's quite minor. i also don't know if i love the actual vanilla note in this, but since it's more cotton candy forward to me, i don't mind it. my biggest complaint is that i can barely smell it anymore and it seems to disappear quickly, maybe just because i've worn it too much. but overall i really like this interpretation of cotton candy. i also love the vintage look of the bottle 💞 8/10 💞
outremer vanilla extract: i read somewhere this was different than the perfume version so i thought i would try it. i mixed mine with perfumer's alcohol to make a spray and i do feel like it's different than the edt. i think it's richer overall, and i get less cotton candy, more vanilla. it reminds me of vanilla ice cream but it also smells a bit synthetic/playdoughy. the fact that my edt bottle is several years old might partially account for this difference in scent too. 🩷 6/10 🩷
sugarful by michel germain: i wanted to love this because of the cute bottle. sadly to me it smells like thick, syrupy strawberry medicine 🥀 1/10 🥀
demeter cotton candy: i like the other demeter fragrances i've tried but not this one. it's chalky, dry, almost minty bubblegum. i like bubblegum scents but this is not good 🌷 2/10 🌷
delicious cotton candy by gale hayman: this smells exactly like cherry cough drops to me, it's got that same syrupy/medicinal quality as sugarful but maybe lighter and therefore less offensive 🌷 2/10 🌷
barbe a papa by tutti delices: i didn't mind this at first, sweet and fresh in the opening. drydown reminds me of bubblegum more than cotton candy but theres an off-note that reminds me of bandaids or a hospital 🌷 2/10 🌷
skylar boardwalk delight: soapy cotton candy. it's fluffy and sweet but slightly denser than i was expecting, maybe due to the detergent/clean laundry smell? i don't find this fruity which is a plus, but the cotton candy sweetness feels muted by that heavy soapiness. kinda disappointed because i thought this was gonna be my holy grail. but even though it's not the photorealistic fresh cotton candy i was hoping for, i do really like it. i originally bought the body mist since there was no way to sample this, but i ended up ordering the perfume as well 💞 8/10 💞
egeo dolce o boticario: this is supposed to smell like cotton candy, marshmallows and raspberry ice cream. i hate this, it reminds me of oriana/ldbs dupes i've tried and also hated. something about this interpretation of fruity whipped cream/marshmallows is just awful to me. not in the slightest bit airy, sparkling or fresh, it's just pure synthetic, syrupy and heavy 💔 0/10 💔
snow fairy by lush: its so incredibly sour. instead of bubblegum or cotton candy i just get overpowering citrus and dish soap 🥀 1/10 🥀
pink sugar berry blast: i got this because it was supposed to be like pink sugar without the licorice note. but to me this was just straight, linear black licorice 💔 0/10 💔
loewe white magnolia: i blind bought a full bottle of this and it's a totally unique interpretation compared to the others i tried. it's more traditionally "perfumey" than the others, especially on a tester strip where it seems like the fragrance doesn't develop as it's supposed to and all the notes just sit alongside one another. on skin though, i love it! at first spray it reminds me of a fruity alcoholic drink that a classy parisian grandmother would drink in summer and at this stage i'm picking up a hint of licorice (like a licoricey alcohol) which i'm usually not a fan of, but i don't totally hate here. after a few minutes i get a creamy floral scent that reminds me of a dewy, thick white flower petal. but as it develops the cotton candy comes to the foreground and the other notes fade away. for the first hour or so it's a floral cotton candy, fluffier and warmer than any of the others i've tried, not overly sweet. after the first hour i was literally shocked at how beautiful this had become. it's pink and gold like warm cotton candy at a funfair during golden hour after a short rain and all the rides and booths are covered in dewy blooming flowers. then, over time the flowers fade and the sweetness blossoms even more. the cotton candy note in this is near perfect still-warm freshly spun sugar, not at all fruity but to me it somehow smells pink, and the bubble it gives is incredibly beautiful: soft, airy, delicate sweetness. taking points off mainly because i don't love the opening and it's not as much of a linear cotton candy. but to me this perfume is a work of art 💘 7/10 💘
cirque du soleil perfume: the most prominent note for me in the opening is caramel popcorn or kettle corn, with maybe a hint of fruitiness. i don't start getting the cotton candy until a few minutes in, but it's more of a burnt sugar smell than photorealistic cotton candy and the way it combines with the buttery caramelized popcorn is just a bit strange for me. it evokes the feeling of being in a circus tent after everyone has gone home, and the smell of syrupy caramel in the air combines with popcorn crushed on the floor, and the burnt sugary residue is left on the cotton candy drums, and everything just smells sweet and sticky. overall i find this quite heavy and intense which is the opposite of what i like about cotton candy in fragrance. i really wish i liked it more, cause everything about this fragrance, the notes and it's presentation is so fun 🌸 3/10 🌸
kitsch warm sugar hair perfume: grapefruit with cotton candy and a hint of praline. the cotton candy note reminds me a bit of boardwalk delight but the citrus, while not overpowering it completely, does take away from it for me. i do like how it smells in my hair though! 🩷 6/10 🩷
dolce zucchero by heysugar fragranceco (etsy): dupe for cerchi nell'acqua zucchero filato (another dupe for this is happiness of soft cloud by dua), which i haven't tried. this smells good but it doesn't smell like cotton candy to me. maybe tiramisu or something? or salted caramel ice cream? pretty similar to bianco latte/eclair 🌺 4/10 🌺
bath & bodyworks cotton candy clouds: this is one of the last ones i tried and i'm surprised how much i like it! it smells like sweet, bright berries, and there's a bit of vanilla underneath. it somewhat gives cotton candy/fun fair vibes, but it also reminds me of whipped cream topped with berries 🩷 6/10 🩷
custom perfume from attar:action on etsy: the notes i went with for my custom perfume were candy floss, bubblegum & vanilla. this was super inexpensive so i'm glad i tried it but honestly my first impression was that it smells exactly like snow fairy from lush (might be my fault for including a bubblegum note to be fair). maybe a bit less citrusy. i think i like it better than snow fairy, even though it's not super cotton candy to me, it still smells good. the idea behind this is super cool too! 🌸 3/10 🌸
lathr cotton candy: this was a gamble, not many reviews and there were no notes other than cotton candy so i had no clue what to expect from this one. it's listed as a mens cologne on fragrantica but this isn't the slightest bit masculine. it's very fruity, sour, and slightly sparkling, almost with a blue raspberry vibe. it reminds me a little of a blue raspberry drink. despite the fruitiness, which normally tends to be a drawback for me, this is fun and delicious smelling. 🎀 5/10 🎀
alina milani pink vanilla sugar: this is similar to cotton candy clouds, maybe a little less bright/fruity which i find makes it feel slighty less like actual fruit and more like fruity cotton candy. it also reminds me of ybm at times but never fully veers into that territory which i'm glad of, i find it so much fresher and better 💘 7/10 💘
cotton candy fragrance oil sponix: this is delicious but it smells like pink bubblegum to me. this is like my perfect bubblegum fragrance actually. i guess it somewhat gives cotton candy too but it's more bubblegum i think 🎀 5/10 🎀
geminie stardust: i saw a girl on tiktok say this was her fav cotton candy fragrance. was hesitant about buying because of the passionfruit note. it's soft, gently sweet, fruity, tropical.. it has that slightly sickly smell of overripe, juicy tropical fruits. although the passionfruit comes through first and foremost for me, it does also remind me of warm cotton candy, especially in the drydown 🩷 6/10 🩷
hempz spun sugar & vanilla bean lotion: just ordered this, will update when i receive it if anyone is interested!
🎡 perfumes without direct cotton candy notes 🎡
sugar blush by loveshackfancy: despite the notes being completely different, this is almost exactly the same as skylar boardwalk delight right down to the soapyness. i get a hint of fruit in this one in the opening but once it dries down, side by side i can barely tell them apart. i actually might prefer this one, i find it a little less intense on the soapy/laundry vibe. boardwalk delight dries down more soapy, maybe? but the difference is miniscule 💞 8/10 💞
mazzolari vaniglia: another full bottle blind buy, and it was somehow so much better than i could have dreamed. similar to outremer vanilla but no flat soda vibe, and with significantly better performance and fuller, like if outremer is a charcoal sketch, this is a full colour oil painting. it evokes cotton candy ice cream more than cotton candy itself, because it's more cool, smooth and creamy rather than warm and fluffy spun sugar, but this is insanely delicious. the more it dries down it also starts to remind me of bubblegum a little bit, which i love. this is a holy grail for me 💖 10/10 💖
profumum roma vanitas: way too fruity. it's light and airy but also incredibly sweet and fruity. not unpleasant but it's not at all like cotton candy to me, it smells like fruity lollipops or swedish fish candies maybe? on the drydown it starts getting more sour, like sour fruit candies. not getting much vanilla or spun sugar in this 🌸 3/10 🌸
profumum roma acqua e zucchero: citrus candy bomb. and maybe a hint of black licorice? it reminds me of lemon cough drops. not remotely cotton candy and i also really don't like this 🌷 2/10 🌷
arte profumi sucre noir: while many people make comparisons between the two, i don't actually find this very similar to mazzolari vaniglia. it's much sharper, less cloudy and fluffy, with a burnt edge to the sugar, less sweet with instead a hint of citrus or something sour, and a somewhat medicinal, rubbery undertone, almost like a balloon. while i don't love it, i do think maybe the comparison with vaniglia made me see this one less favourably than i would have otherwise, and it does somewhat resemble slightly burnt or caramelized cotton candy, so maybe this is someone's ideal cotton candy fragrance, even if it isn't mine 🎀 5/10 🎀
fire at will by jovoy: yet another full bottle blind buy! supposed to be similar to outremer vanilla and saw a few reviews that this smells like freshly spun cotton candy. this is so good! for the first little bit this reminds me of sucre noir, i get that same burnt sugar note that i got there, but i think it's more balanced with the vanilla here. something in this stage reminds me of summer, almost like a lightly toasted marshmallow. after the first hour or so the burnt note softens and the sweetness blossoms. the drydown is easily my favourite part of this perfume. where vaniglia is cotton candy ice cream, i feel like this one is more like actual spun sugar, lighter, less smooth and creamy, a bit less sweet, but more warm and fluffy, resting over a delicate vanilla base. there is a hint of musk as well that sometimes makes this pull a touch soapy, but i don't find it too much really. there are times when i wear this that it reminds me of cotton candy, but i don't think it's linear enough to call it a cotton candy scent really. what i find really beautiful about this fragrance is that while it's sugary sweet, it's also so incredibly light and delicate that it barely feels like a gourmand. instead of smelling like dessert, it's like a gentle cloud of sweetness, addicting and very wearable 🩷 6/10 🩷
solinotes vanilla: another one that was supposed to smell like cotton candy vanilla. this was so faint to me? i don't get the cotton candy at all and the vanilla note itself i don't think i like all that much. maybe i'm missing something with this fragrance 🌸 3/10 🌸
sdj 59: sugared violet and vanilla. idk how i feel about this one, it does somewhat have that warm, sugary vanilla vibe that i associate with cotton candy. i think it reminds me more of powdery candies though. while it's not a bad scent and i don't dislike it, i find this weirdly cloying at times and rarely want to reach for it. 🎀 5/10 🎀
khadlaj cloud candy (ybm dupe): pure sugar but like hard candies rather than cotton candy. i get a strawberry marshmallow vibe but it's not fluffy 🌸 3/10 🌸
pink blush (ybm dupe): maybe a little closer than cloud candy, but still very much strawberry marshmallow rather than cotton candy. personally, i don't like this dna 🌸 3/10 🌸
iced petals (pink blush flanker): i don't understand what this fragrance is trying to be. it somewhat gives a cotton candy vibe i guess? but this is a burnt, unsweetened cotton candy. i don't get any vanilla, just burnt sugar crystals or maybe burning wood? i've had it for over a month and the scent hasn't changed, but i will continue to let it macerate to see if it improves and update if it does 🌸 3/10 🌸
sand and fog white vanilla: supposed to be a dupe for outremer vanille but it's less cotton candy with vanilla and more vanilla sugary frosting. also the vanilla note gives strong playdough vibes to me 🌸 3/10 🌸
comptoir sud pacifique vanille abricot: i read a bunch of reviews that this gives cotton candy. to me, it doesn't. it's very jammy, linear apricot. i don't even get the vanilla really. it's not bad but not a scent i personally like and definitely not cotton candy. i wanted to try vanille extreme too but now i'm reluctant to try anymore fragrances from this brand 🌷 2/10 🌷
al rehab soft: the citrus is at the forefront and it's not a fresh citrus, more like bug spray. very similar to acqua e zucchero 🥀 1/10 🥀
philosophy falling in love edp: i read reviews this smells like blackberry cotton candy. i was expecting something similar to bbw cotton candy clouds but with blackberry instead of red berries. but this is actually so much better! it has that airy, fluffy, sugaryness that gives cotton candy way more than bbw's creaminess. there's also a slight tartness to it, but it's very soft. the berry note is prominent, but it doesn't smell like actual fruit or jam, but just adds colour to spun sugar aspect of the perfume. unlike most of the others i tried, this smells like cotton candy first and foremost, it doesn't smell like something else while also giving slight cotton candy vibes. it smells like a cloud of sparkling purple or blue spun sugar 💘 7/10 💘
philosophy unconditional love edt: also purported in reviews to smell like cotton candy. i'm actually shocked by both of these! this is even better than falling in love for me. this is more like pink cotton candy to falling in love's blue cotton candy. i don't get much berry here but i get a bit of lemon (there's no actual lemon in the notes so maybe my nose is reading the raspberry wrong). it really gives spun sugar! it actually reminds me of boardwalk delight but just the cotton candy note, and with a bit of lemon in the opening (this note does fade eventually). taking a point off for the opening but once this dries down it's pretty much perfect. also there were tons of reviews that this performs poorly but it was quite longlasting for me. i put it on before bed (a spray on each wrist) and it smelled amazing as i was getting ready for bed, and i could still smell it on my skin well into the next day 💝 9/10 💝
pacifica island vanilla: clean, realistic vanilla bean with a light sweetness that reminds me of a marshmallow. but i can see the cotton candy comparison too. it's light and airy, gently sweet and with no fruit, musk or toasted sugar notes that i can detect. not overly gourmand. this smells really good! 🩷 6/10 🩷
🫧 bubblegum: 🫧
le petit tokyomilk: this is not cotton candy but it is bubble gum and i'm absolutely in love with it. its rainy, dewy flower petals with bubblegum and vanilla. sweet and soft and fresh, and the floral notes make this more universally wearable than a linear candy scent i think. i think it just got discontinued so i have to sing its praises a little, so underrated!
hexennacht scream queen: bubblegum & vanilla, not cotton candy. it's very bright, realistic bubblegum, like pink powdery bubblegum from when you were a kid. i feel like there is an orange note here, that just adds brightness and juiciness but it still smells pink. it smells good but it might be too realistic to be wearable? i can even smell the powder and slight dryness of a piece of bubblegum. i think i prefer the sponix cotton candy for a more wearable bubblegum honestly
🎪 on my radar but haven't tried: 🎪
egyptian sugar soiree: supposed to be coconutty, lactonic but also spun sugar maybe?
soft sugar skin champagne: single note ethyl maltol, dupe of a discontinued fragrance called crystallized sugar by aether, which i haven't tried either
l'eau lita blancheide: cotton candy, coconut and iris. comparisons to acqua e zucchero stopped me from blind buying this
poesie cloud: supposed to be photorealistic warm spun sugar but i don't think you can buy this anymore?
black hearted tart cotton candy skies/cloud on my tongue: single note cotton candy/cotton candy with a peony note
innocent & delicious by calaj: minty, lactonic cotton candy?
wilson & sons spoon co cotton candy: a few people on tiktok are saying this is the best cotton candy fragrance? unfortunately i can't buy it in canada :(
stereoplasm snoozy cat & sick of love: lavender cotton candy and blueberry cotton candy with a rain note, respectively
storybrooke scents cotton candy skies: cotton candy but with the dreaded licorice note? not sure if i'll try this
kyse zucchero filato: tempted to blind buy but the reviews seem so mixed
solo ella edt by loewe: interested in this because i loved white magnolia so much. this also has a cotton candy note, but this time blended with peony and tropical fruits
karnain sucre addict: there's a cotton candy note here but i think it's similar to sucre noir which i wasn't crazy about
esthero smells like bang: light cotton candy with a hint of smoke
noyz 12:00: raspberry cotton candy with pepper?
xarmony vanilla x cotton candy: not sure if i'll try, not many reviews on this one and not cheap either
paalm crazy candy: french drugstore perfume, notes of cotton candy, marshmallow, caramel and chocolate?
bond no 9 greenwich village: oakmoss + cotton candy, gets compared to br540
