Why is doubt so pervasive among multitalented creatives and what you are going to do about it
You have heard it before, or you have been it before. The creative individual starting their fifth project this week or their fifth business this year. Doing all these things, yet having little to no show for it. I experienced this often in the past. You start something, then the going gets tough, or you get distracted, then lose momentum and refocus elsewhere. This has traditionally, and even in modern contexts, been thought of as a crutch or something to grow out of. What if it were the opposite? Could your weakness have truly been your strength? I believe we were created for a purpose, and our personalities are part of that purpose. The solution you have been looking for isn’t working against yourself by trying to be like everyone else. The solution starts with understanding that your life has a purpose and that your “quirks” aren’t a fluke. Yes, we all have less-than-good character flaws that we must do away with, but I’m not talking about definitively bad traits. I am talking about what is uniquely you. Your difference, which others interpret as weird or mundane. It differs for everyone. For me, it is my ability to talk like an Ad naturally, my ability to be funny even when not trying, or my focus on being solution-oriented. It sounds great here, but in real life, it is not always perceived as helpful. People who do not want solutions hate to see me coming and those who like to enjoy a quiet moment. This can manifest as constant disagreements and misundertanding with my family. That seems like qualities I should get rid of to protect the status quo but it’s actually not. While not arguing it’s important some of us were made to deeply connect or bring aweness to others. Maybe your purpose is just as polarizing, but in the opposite way, as different. The point is finding out what makes you different, or what truly puts you in a field as the only player. Then, optimize your skill set to improve your God-given abilities and learn how to leverage them for the good of others, your own self-improvement, and your business purposes. To some, all this might seem like I’m saying double down and be annoying all up in people’s faces but as important as using your skillset to your advantage is, it is just as important to know when it is time to pull back. “Therefore be as shrewd as snakes and as innocent as doves”(Matthew 10:16, NIV)
